Xiaomi SU7 – The smartphone car from China
The smartphone giant Xiaomi is now getting involved in the car business. The SU7 is the first car in an entire model series that is intended to open up a new business area for Xiaomi.
After the electronics giant Xiaomi announced its entry into the car industry in 2021, the time has finally come three years later. With the SU7, Xiaomi's first car has appeared on the market in China.
- Sporty electric sedan in competition with the Tesla Model 3
- With 299 hp and a range of up to 830 km
For the market launch, Xiaomi is not only relying on the technical values of the SU7, but also on a competitive price of the equivalent of less than 28,000 euros for the base model. The SU7 is available in three different variants.
Xiaomi SU7: Exterior design
Co-founder and CEO Lei Jun had set the goal of surpassing Porsche one day, and the exterior design makes it easy to see the source of inspiration and goal. The SU7 is very similar to the Porsche design language and plays with dynamic and streamlined shapes in the body. Xiaomi's car is 4.9 meters long with a width of 1.9 meters and a height of 1.4 meters. In addition to Porsche, Tesla's Model 3 is the clear competitor. At the top, a panoramic roof ensures a bright interior, while the roof sloping backwards cuts a sporty figure. 9 colors are available for the paintwork.
Xiaomi SU7 motorization and battery
The Xiaomi SU7 needs only 5.28 seconds to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (or 5.7 seconds for the SU7 Pro). The maximum speed of 210 km/h is provided by the engine with an output of 220 kW. For the battery, Xiaomi relies on a 73.6 kWh battery in the standard model, while the Pro model has 94.3 kWh. This gives the SU7 a range of 700 and 830 km respectively. Xiaomi has also not let itself be slouched when it comes to charging: Both variants charge from 10% to 80% within 30 minutes. Even with short charging stops of 15 minutes, the battery is said to charge a range of 350 km.
In order for the SU7 to live up to its full name "Speed Ultra", Xiaomi has a third model variant on offer: the SU7 Max. This has two motors, one on each axle and thus comes to 495 kW. The SU7 Max then manages the sprint as an all-wheel-drive vehicle within 2.78 seconds. The top speed of the top model is 265 km/h. Together with the 101 kWh battery, the SU7 Max achieves a range of 800 km. The 800 volt base of the SU7 Max is particularly worthwhile when charging. Xiaomi's top model manages 10% to 80% within 19 minutes, and after 15 minutes of charging, 510 km of range should already be available.
In October 2024, the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra was also officially presented. The racing offshoot of the model series has over 1,500 hp and will be launched in China from March 2025.
Xiaomi SU7: Interior and infotainment
In the interior of the Xiaomi SU7, a 16.1-inch touchscreen greets you directly as a central infotainment console, which dominates the cockpit. On the driver's side, a digital station wagon element extends over 7.1 inches. There are numerous control switches on the steering wheel, which once again underline that Xiaomi, as a smartphone giant, naturally focuses on electronics and connection to its own mobile phones. The digital focus can also be found in the rear with two removable tablets on the backrests of the front seats. This should also allow the passengers in the rear seats to fully interact with the computing power on board.
Xiaomi relies on its own operating system (Hyper OS) and plays to its digital strengths to the full, especially in the assistance systems and the integration of smartphones into the car. With numerous radars and cameras, the Su7 should be able to monitor up to 250 meters around the car and intervene if necessary.
Xiaomi SU7: sales price and start of sales
The Xiaomi SU7 has already been available in China since April 1 and has already received almost 90,000 orders within a day. The standard model starts at 215,900 yuan (approx. €27,688), while the SU7 Pro costs 245,900 yuan (approx. €31,535). For the top model SU7 Max, buyers have to be prepared for 299,999 yuan (approx. €38,460).
Xiaomi has not yet shared any export plans. But with the goal of establishing itself among the world's top electric car manufacturers, an introduction to Europe and the rest of the world seems only a matter of time. The European audience was last able to get a first impression in February at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. As soon as there is more information, we will keep you posted.
